Key walks into Nestrim’s tent with worry etching her features. She stops short of his desk and remains standing. She waits for the lecture she knows is coming.

Nestrim looks up at his sister, his eyes don't give off a lot of information on what he is thinking. He motions for the chair in front of him, "How is your morning going sis?"

She sits a bit reluctantly. She lets out a sigh.
“I think you know how my morning has gone, you wouldn’t have sent for me otherwise. I know I messed it up. How bad is it? Can I do anything to fix it?”

A look of exhaustion flows into his eyes. He cares about her, but she can see he is frustrated, "I will be honest with you sis. I don't know. They are a hard people to get to trust others, and I am not sure I can change their opinion that we aren't exactly like the other elves... " The frustration is obviously not with just her, "You might have made a faux pas, but normally we could get beyond it fairly easy with most relations. The problem is our house ruled them for 300 years along with a couple other houses. When they kicked us out five hundred years ago, we spent the next 300 years sending in armies in crusades to recover 'our lost mines'."
He breaths deeply, "So while yes, I think today has made this particularly hard, we are already set on a path I don't know we can fix even if we never met them for this trip. The sad part is, I think they would make our best allies possible and they would accept your type of rule, as in no slavery and a land of mostly free people, the best. However, our families may have already doomed that anyways."
He pushes away the plate of food in front of him from the night before, nothing has been touched on it.

Key shakes her head, tears welling up in her eyes. She takes deep breaths so they don’t fall and she looks away for several ling moments while she regains her composure. When she looks back there are no tears but she is sad.
“Its times like this that make me think I can’t do this.” She takes another deep breath and sets her shoulders.
“If there’s nothing we can do, then maybe we can tey again with them after we are more established and they can see how we mean to manage an empire. I know this will make things harder for you. Im sorry.”

Nestrim smiles at his sister, "These are all lessons we are better learning now then later. I think you will be fine, and don't let it make you think you can't rule, no one can rule by themselves" He just looks tired, "Even father has several advisors, along with specific specialists in almost all areas. He will talk about big points, but he lets them hammer out the fine details and then he decides if he is ok with it or not, all rulers are like that unless they are crazy or dictators who run their kingdoms into the ground and you aren't either'."
He reaches out and takes his sister's hand, "I still think we might be able to work it out with them. If we can they will probably be our best elven ally that we could put our back to... as long as we don't do something that dishonors them." He laughs partially at that, indicating it was a jest, "Everything we do is harder here, but your job is even harder so don't worry about me. Maybe later tonight or tomorrow, or even in a day or two see if you can connect with Kalil. Their passions are incredibly bright, both positive and negative, and they fade quickly after their outburst. I have seen two of them duel and two hours later getting drunk together, they live mostly in the moment."

Key takes a breath and lets it out, laughing lightly.
“It seems an unexpected part of you job seems to be quite a bit of hand holding figuratively speaking.” She squeezes his hand then lets it go.
“Your good at it. I’ll reach out to him tomorrow. Is there anything I can do to make the chance that he will talk to me better? Something I should avoid mentioning? Maybe a gift...” she trails off thinking.
“Alluvian might know his favorite beverage. Maybe I should have some of it on hand.”

Nestrim sits back, "The tribes all have different drinks they prefer. However, if you bring a gift, bring him water, just plain, clean water. You may want to have Rabbit wash his feet as well. I would recommend don't do it yourself, not for this, but it is one of the customs to show an apology. Having your handmaiden would be a pretty big deal and should alleviate any honor he feels he lost."
He nods as if that is a good idea, "Yes, that is the best option, bring him water and have Rabbit wash his feet, and maybe anoint it. Cleaning someone else's feet shows a measure of respect and familiarity that is good."

Key nods, taking careful note of the instructions.
“Why shouldn’t I wash his feet? What should I anoint his feet with?”

"Washing a person's feet are common to the east and in the desert. Generally most people wear sandals and their feet would be dirty and the end of the trip, especially when visiting a friend or ally. It is one of the older traditions to offer a place for a guest to wash their feet after a long day's travel, and if you are especially grateful to see them, or perhaps trying to show some humility a master of the house would have their servant do the washing."
He shifts in his seat, "If you had more time spent with Kalil, or if he was a higher ranking individual then maybe it would be better for you to do it, but you have certain decorum you have to keep in order to not only keep respect of the desert horse masters, but to also make sure you keep the respect of your own elven households. They wouldn't tolerate you doing something like that, they wouldn't follow you. Also, I think Kalil will know it will bother you more to have Rabbit do it then yourself."

“He’s dead right about that. The last thing I want to do is make Rabbit have to do my penance again.” She pulls an uncomfortable face and put an accent on the word ‘again’.
“Is this the only thing you wanted to discuss? How is everything else. I notice your appitite is off, is there anything I can do to help?”

He seems pleased with Key's concern for him. He looks over at the plate of food and chuckles, "Nothing a few hours sleep after a few hours with...." He drops off who he was talking about.
He pushes at the food on the plate half heartedly, moving the already congealed meal around weakly, "To be honest something is wrong here, but I can't figure it out. I have met with all the elven families so far, something is off. I can't quite catch it though and it prickles at the back of my neck. Things just don't seem to fit right."

Key’s mouth quirks up at the corner at the suggestion of Luke’s name. It pulls back down again when he starts to express concern.
“What are you seeing. Should we make preparations to leave?”

He gets a sour look on his face, "it isn’t anything I can recommend us leaving fir. Nothing specifically bad and everything seems appropriate but it just feels like dynamics are different from what I expected ." He takes a drink of his water.
He sits back looking uncomfortable, "It wouldn’t matter anyways. Alluvian has to be here until the end if she wants to be recognized. If she isn’t that brings a whole host of issues including giving others a chance to lay a claim on her crown."

Key grunts in understanding. She leans forward and rests her elbows on the table.
“So we’ll stay. We’ll have one more reason to be on guard. What sort of dynamic where you expecting?”
