I was asked specifics about slavery in Kokand. While I do have some notes I had put this on the back burner for now. That being said here are my off-the -cuff answers to the below questions. I reserve the right to radically change things depending on how this actually goes. I have now started up the slave guild writeup, that will help me solidify anything needed here.
1. The variability of slaves is HUGE. The general range of slave costs is from as low as 50gp, with an “average” domestic servant being 800, and up to 1,500 for someone educated young and reliable. I do NOT take into account gender. Female slaves cost the same as males (and anything that rides between the same). Costs are based on age, health, and type of slave.
None of this takes into account exceptions such as slaves on the verge of death (they might take a few SP instead) up to a lord of another human empire which would run maybe 10,000+ gold.
None of this also takes into account race or class. Elves would be a lot more valuable for a number of different possibilities, the same with an Orc, Dwarf, etc. It would all vary on the auction and who it was aimed at.
tl;dr – The price is incredibly flexible, general human range of 50 – 1500gp.
2. Yes, there are child slaves, but no children from the Warren or anywhere else in Kokand. Kokand generally only allows its citizens (even slaves) be put into slavery except as a result of a crime/debt/sold themselves. It is said there are rumors that children are stolen away and sold in other cities, but overall the rate of children impressed into slavery is very little. They are far more likely to be in prison, working chain gangs (ok, the City’s slaves but that is technically different).
tl;dr – yes children slaves, but not city children, you will find those in prison.
3. Not too many. “Warren Rats” (adults and children) as they are known are not tolerated in the South Market. Too many commodities, important City offices/officials and high end stores make the local guard very observant here. Warran Rants are tolerated more in North Market because that is basically the grocery store of Kokand and the district makes its money off the other districts buying food.
Also the type of market here is less likely to suffer pickpockets, because the type of product, and because a lot of people buying here have their own guards, in addition to heavy city guard presence.
tl;dr – few enough children due to treatement, that you won’t see them unless you have some city survival skills
1. What are the low, standard, and high prices for slaves in your world?
2. Are there any children for sale in the slave market, and if so are any of them recognizable from the Warrens?
3. Would any of the children from the Warrens wander around the South Market area panhandling/pickpocketing?
